Last week in the studio, our assignment was "food photography". Creativity was essential in preparing my subject because my tiny kitchen does not have an oven. So, with that in mind, I browsed google images for some inspiration until I came across this photo:
PB&J is an American classic, the perfect choice for my cuisine shoot. I woke up early before class to buy the ingredients as well as the cookie cutters. The shoot was very nostalgic. I gained "window lighting" in our cave-like studio (cold and dark) by attaching a big softbox on the flash.
Here are my favorite photos from the shoot:
My teacher suggested that the apron attracted too much attention in the frame, so I removed it from the set.
Does it look window light-ish? PS-a white tablecloth/sheet is a good prop to have around in the studio.
I borrowed a macro lens from school for close ups.
And last but not least, the creepy PB&J composition.
Two interesting lessons I learned from this class on food photography:
1) In advertisments, ice cream is really mashed potatoes with food coloring (gross) to maintain the right shape and to avoid a melty mess.
2) You never eat your set afterwards. The teacher told us that in preparation the week before, but I truly understood his point when I noticed at the end of class a huge wad of hair sitting on top of my composition. Again, gross.
Sincerely Sophie
Fun!

Your sandwiches look good enough to eat. And of course, I disagree with your teacher and like the apron in the picture. Eye of the beholder and all that!
