I was browsing iTunes the other day and stumbled upon a great blog post idea. I found that iTunes sometimes gets celebrities to create a playlist of their favorite songs with descriptions and explanations of their choices. So for this post, I pretended that I was famous and made my own celebrity playlist. The list began at some 40-something songs, but I narrowed it down to the top 18. This was not easy!
Feel free to check out these songs on iTunes/Pandora/YouTube and buy them for your music libraries. You won’t be disappointed! And here's my celebrity photo. The picture was taken by my lovely and capable 10 year old sister Lauren, in front of my shower curtain.
My Celebrity Playlist
Spinning Me Around –Fools & Horses
Fools & Horses are my all-time favorite band, plus they’re Marylanders! This song is about being patient with someone in a relationship and being afraid to fall in love. I love the lyrics, and the lead singer, Matt Hutchison. He influenced me to make this blog actually. Maybe I’ll tell you about that another time. :)
Everywhere–Michelle Branch Kind of a personal anthem because I would sing it (and play it on guitar) with 42 of my best friends, so it reminds me of them.
Modern Chemistry—Motion City Soundtrack Actually, I abhor chemistry (I blame high school), but the song’s not bad. I particularly like the beginning of the song “I believe in medication, I believe in therapy, I believe in crystal light…” To me, it’s as if he’s trying to convince himself of these beliefs. Plus, he makes scientific references to synapses not connecting, which I can relate to, plus I am a biology geek, so most science-y things excite me.
Spiderwebs—No Doubt Having a few Ska songs on your iPod is only healthy. Personally, I like old-school No Doubt songs like this one better than their newer stuff. Plus, I think that Gwen’s solo career was a mistake (and her Korean posse was kind of scary). You know when the phone is ringing but you see who it is and you don’t want to talk to them, for whatever reason. Well, that’s the basis of this song. Heard the World—OAR OAR is a rock band from Rockville, Maryland (!!!) which I never knew until I Wikipedia-d them. My friend Ben gave me this song. He was disturbed that I didn’t have it already. I love it now! Somewhere Out There—Our Lady Peace The lead singer, Raine Maida, has a sexy voice. His songs, particularly from the album Gravity, make my heart race a little bit. I’m not sure how I feel about the band’s newer music though. A Girl and Her Horse—Carbon Leaf I didn’t love this song until I let my dad listen to it a few times and he decided it was about me and my horse. You know how some days you feel like you can trust your dog better than anyone else? That’s sort of the essence of this song. Just think of the horse as a very, very big dog! Under the Weather—KT Tunstall This is just one of those “cry it out” songs. Good to have on your iPod just in case. And it’s more metaphorical than mopey, so you can listen to it when you aren’t sad too. Sadie Hawkins Dance—Relient K This song is hilarious. Relient K records 2 kinds of songs—deep, self-exploring ones, and light, funny ones. Sadie Hawkins Dance is about the class clown who is just minding his own business (i.e. running away from the beefy quarterback, being a goof in class…etc) when finally, the pretty girl notices him and asks him to the Sadie Hawkins dance, and he’s set on wearing khakis and a sweater. Sparrow—Scatteredtrees This song is so mellow, with a tinge of bittersweetness, and I love it. They use lots of beautiful metaphors that I only wish that I fully understood. The song makes me want to know why the singer is sad. I just want to hug him and make it all better! It’s definitely my favorite song, at the moment. Stupid Little Love Song—Fefe Dobson Love love love the lyrics to Stupid Little Love Song because they’re ironic and edgy. Plus the story is great--girl meets boy, boy has everything going for him and is good at everything, girl is intimidated. The best part is when Fefe lists all the accomplishments of the boy’s family members: “Your sisters got a 4.0. Your father’s got his own talk show. Your brother aced the science test--he found the cure to morning breath”. Scar Tissue—Red Hot Chili Peppers I always feel cool when I listen to Scar Tissue. (Now, of course, I feel silly for sharing that.) I never understood the meaning of the song, but all the words sound good together, and the wailing notes on the guitar are great for driving with all the windows down. I guess it’s one of those--you have to try it to understand--things. Gimme Some—G. Love This is a good, happy, morning song about love. Listen and love my friends… Home—Marc Broussard Marc Broussard’s music is part soul, part rock, part country. Is there a genre for that? His songs are always entertaining. This one stands out to me. I think he might even throw some gospel in the mix as well. If I Am—Nine Days This song is beautiful in so many ways. The protagonist is in love with a girl (haha, what else is new?) but he’s torn because his girl seems to be deeply broken over something and it prevents her from being happy. He wants to stand by her, but he feels like he’s in the way. This is my favorite Nine Days song, but their others are great too. Murray—Pete Yorn The music is catchy and Pete Yorn has an interesting voice. When I listen to this song, my foot starts bobbing right away. Smooth—Santana and Rob Thomas The name of the song describes the content. Plus it gives me a little confidence boost and makes me feel pretty. Drops of Jupiter—Train This song is about leaving love and coming back to find it right where you left it. This was once my favorite song. I think it’s about being in love with your best friend, but don’t quote me on that. Sincerely Sophie
